Week 2 Varsity Insider Power Rankings

And as you’ll see below, it was for good reason. From the jump, with a new No. 1 and working down, there was a major shake-up to the top 10.

With a heavy dose of high school football games on Wednesday, including a couple under the lights, the development of this week’s Varsity Insider power rankings had to wait until late hours.

(Editor’s Note: Updated Men’s Football Power Rankings will be released on Thursday morning).

Ranking this week (until 09/21):

1. Colchester High School

Registration: 5-0

Week 1 rankings: 3

▶ Colchester held a finishing clinic in the 4-0 home win over Mount Mansfield. The Lakers moved and passed well in the offensive third and were opportunistic on all four goals in the first half. Historically, Colchester haven’t held the No.1 position in this space too often, but that’s well deserved at this stage of the season.

2. Champlain Valley Union High School

Registration: 4-1

Week 1 rankings: 2

▶ CVU has conceded just one goal in three games against Vermont opponents: 2-0 against Burr and Burton, 5-1 against South Burlington and 1-0 against Burlington. Coach Rob Cole’s pre-season calls for a return to the team’s previous defensive form from the 2018 and 2019 Championship seasons appear to be on track so far.

3. South Burlington High School

Registration: 4-1

Week 1 rankings: 5

▶ How to bounce back from 5-1 on the road to compete with CVU? Defeat one of your other rivals in a championship rematch on your very next game. Wolves only made it on Wednesday night, holding Essex scoreless until the latter stages of a 2-1 decision.

4. Essex High School

Registration: 2-2

Week 1 rankings: 4

▶ Essex will need to regroup quickly after the loss to South Burlington: Colchester, Wolves and MMU are the defending champions’ next three games.

5. Mount Mansfield Union High School

Registration: 4-1

Ranking week 1: 1

▶ A difficult result will not determine the Cougars’ season. But a 4-0 loss on the road, in the team’s first Metro game, necessitates a drop in the standings.

6. Mount Anthony Union High School

Registration: 4-1

Week 1 rankings: 6

▶ OT hero Collin Bevin handed the Patriots their first John James Tournament victory in five years on Saturday, Bennington Banner’s Michael Mawson wrote. It was Bevin’s second winner this season.

7. Stowe High School

Registration: 4-1

Week 1 rankings: 9

▶ TJ Guffey had a memorable strike on Wednesday. Not only was he an overtime winner, Guffey unloaded a 30-yard one-timer that soared above 90, launching Stowe past U-32 and moving up this week’s standings.

8. Burlington High School

Registration: 2-3

Week 1 rankings: seven

▶ The Seahorses have gone four one-goal games, going 2-2 in that streak. But BHS is yet to emerge victorious against DI opponents, including Wednesday’s loss to CVU.

9. Montpellier High School

Registration: 3-0-1

Week 1 rankings: Bubble

▶ The Solons make their first top-10 appearance this season thanks to Tyler Thomas’ late winner to beat Harwood.

10. Harwood Union High School

Registration: 2-2

Week 1 rankings: 8

▶ The Highlanders were on the losing side of a thrilling game in Montpellier on Wednesday night.
